New research released by the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) at IMEX Frankfurt 2026 shows that geopolitical conflict, policy changes and socio-political instability are having a growing impact on the international meetings and conferences industry.
According to IAPCO’s 2026 Global Socio-Political Impact Survey, conducted in partnership with AIPC, AMC Institute, ICCA, IFES and PCMA, gathered responses from 130 organisations worldwide and paints a picture of an industry operating under growing geopolitical pressure. 73.84% of respondents said global conflicts have affected their ability to plan or host international meetings, up from 53.92% in 2025.
The survey also found that 65.38% experienced travel disruptions affecting clients or participants, while 58.46% reported reduced international attendance.
Sissi Lignou said the findings show that geopolitical instability is now directly affecting “the essential exchange” created through conferences and meetings. Meanwhile, Martin Boyle highlighted the increasingly important role of Accredited PCOs in helping clients navigate uncertainty, from contingency planning to participant safety.
The research also revealed growing concerns over government policies, with nearly 60% of respondents saying recent USA policy changes had affected planning for events taking place between 2026 and 2028.
