The decision was officially announced by the Minister of Tourism, Marx Beltrão, on April 11th, as part of a package of measures launch to strengthen Brazilian tourism, Brazil + Tourismo.

The new Embratur aims to leverage the tourist flow from an annual total of just over 6.5 million to 12 million foreign tourists by 2022.

Vinicius Lummertz, president of Embratur, emphasised that the Brazilian Tourism Institute modernisation will position the country as one of the best destinations in the world. "Minister Beltrão's announcement is the first step to strengthen international tourism in Brazil and increase our competitiveness along with major world tourism powers. We will prove that tourism goes much further, being an important lever for economic growth. The creation of the agency enables a more aggressive marketing strategy for international promotion actions and now we will have more freedom to advance at high speed in the country's development," he mentioned.
