Air Canada has announced the opening of a new route linking Porto to Montreal from 5 June.

Flights on this new seasonal summer route will operate three times a week, departing from Porto every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoon; in the opposite direction, flights will depart from Montreal on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The new Air Canada connection, operated by an A330-300 fleet, will run until 30 September.

The Canadian airline is launching this new international service, complementing its existing flights from Lisbon, with a view to offering easier access to the country, while attracting tourists and business travellers to Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. For Air Canada, ‘Porto is in a privileged position to offer easy transatlantic connections’ and the new service will not only serve Portuguese travellers, but also those from northern Spain.

‘As the leading airline between Europe and Canada, our mission has been to offer customers the most convenient connections across the Atlantic, opening up opportunities for tourism and business. This new route demonstrates our commitment to the market,’ said Jose Antonio Blazquez Ballarin, Air Canada's Country Manager Sales for Spain and Portugal, in a press release.

He added: ‘With just over two months to go until the launch, we are excited to welcome on board not only customers based in Porto, but also those from Galicia and the wider Iberian Peninsula, supporting our existing operations in Barcelona, Lisbon and Madrid.’

Élise Racicot, Canada's ambassador to Portugal, says she is pleased to ‘witness the expansion of Air Canada's operations in Portugal, especially with the introduction of the new route to Porto’. ‘This new air connection will undoubtedly further strengthen the friendship between the two countries, bringing communities closer together and fostering the interpersonal and commercial ties that are essential to our bilateral relationship,’ she said.

For her part, Karen Strougo, Chief Commercial Officer of ANA | Vinci Airports, welcomes Air Canada to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. ‘This new connection is a clear sign of the growing attractiveness of our region, which sees connectivity between Porto and North America strengthened. The return of an airline the size of Air Canada is also recognition of the work of the teams and the route development strategy of ANA | Vinci Airports, reinforcing the importance and growth of the airport, creating opportunities for passengers and for the economic development of the northern region,’ the company said in a press release.
